I'm so glad that the trend in the US is to have lower volume, funeral home affiliated, crematories versus the European model of a high volume municipal facilities. I've seen through experience here and overseas how the essence of funeral service diminishes significantly when the facility is nothing but a "body burning" business. From the guy that cuts the grass to the funeral director that meets with the family during the most difficult time of their lives, we ALL are part of the process in turning a dead body into a living memory for someone. This is never more important than during the loss of an infant or small child. Crematory operators CAN and SHOULD perform infant cremations to assure there are cremated remains to return to the family even if it takes a bit more effort!
